Hi I am new to the forum and have a question about troubleshooting a transmission issue. I am looking buying a 2001 gp gt. the guy says everything is good with but just started having transmission problems. The car has 130k on it to date. He describes the problem as it struggles to get out of 1st gear but once it changes the trans shifts fine. In order to take off in first gear the car has to be shifted into drive 1. Has anyone heard of this?

Sounds like really bad band slipping.

The forward band is slipping and when put in D1, it doesnt use the band and put in 1st gear directly.

thats a red flag, unless its super cheap, cause it will need a rebuilt or used tranny swapped in sooner or later.

rebuilt tranny at a shop is like 1800 to 2000. so you have a idea what that costs.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. That information is extremely helpful. The car is priced at $1000. And I was looking to spend around 2500 for a used grand prix. So if the body and interior are in good shape it will leave a few dollars for repairs. I have one more question. I am considering doing the work myself I have found a few good threads on removing the transmission. Outside of taking one off and bolting a new one on I know nothing about transmission. So my question is should I look for one with fewer miles from a salvage yard or take the old one to a tranny shop to have it rebuilt?

re built is best, but if you plan to pull it yourself...we welcome you guys here. we are all for cutting out the shop.

you can order a back to basics trans from tep, they are a sponsor/ vendor here they got a basic trans they sell for like 1500.

if you go junk yard they are cheap, but you dont know if its any good or not til its in your car. you get a warranty on the trans if it dont work, you can get another one. but do the work twice chance sucks.

then theres known working used, off CL or the classified ads.

I just wanted to report back that I schedule a day to go see the car in person and test drive it, but the guy never called back to confirm the test drive. So I will probably be passing on this deal.
