Well. So I just finished my trans a week ago. Everything was perfect. After I get off the highway yesturday third gear didn't engage till I was at a higher speed. When I shift manually I get 1,2 and when I put it in 3 it doesn't shift until I go like 20 mph faster. Then when I get into 3rd I'll kick it to D and it kind of jerks a little. I'm sick of this.

first of all where did the trans come from? Did you get one from a junkyark or a rebuilt one? Need a little more info. Any codes sometimes the trans will throw a code for late or slow shifts...

I bought it from a guy with a built prix. It was never installed and had 85k on it. I didn't get any codes dealing with the trans. Just a o2 heater circuit code. I recently lost 3rd and 4th gear. I replaced the third frictions and 4th frictions and steels. I also replace the 4th clutch hub and the sun gear that it goes into at the other end. Are there any fuses or relays that are associated with 3rd?

Nothing with third.. both soleniods are off when third is engaged. It's the failsafe gear.

    What's the failsafe gear?
Do you think it has anything to do with wiring to the pcm? It worked perfectly for a week after completion.

Well I have no third gear. Once again! The frictions are new. So it must be the sprag?

The car runs and drives when in "D", it just won't shift into those gears? Try the input turbine sensor, on top of the trans (reachable through the side cover).

It just won't shift into 3rd. Everything else is perfect. The 3rd frictions are brand new. What do you mean it's on the top but it's reachable through the side cover? You mean on top of the valve body?

It's on the side of the valve body. And if it's not throwing a code, I doubt it's bad.

Third will work w/o power to the transmission. Meaning it requires no soleniods. If you lose third only, it's pretty much down to sprag or clutches and ... you just did clutches.

Well the frictions are still perfect. The sprag is fine. The whole thing turns one way and half turns the other way. I have 2 engine codes. P0134 and p0122. *o2 sensor and throttle pedal position sensor. I've always had the first code but not the second. *It's probably because I have the plugs on trans taken off and the throttle body sensors unplugged to get inside? So now I'm stuck. I don't have any codes that deal with the trans. 3rd frictions are fine and so is the sprag. What should I do!!? :'(

This is the only thing I found. It goes between the sprocket and the 4th support thing. It's supposed to have 3 tabs coming off the back. They are completely gone.

Gone as in broken off? For some reason I am thinking that should be a metal piece not plastic, but that's off my head w/o a trans apart lately.

Doing some digging to find out about that piece. I was looking at page 80 here
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/60667775/T...ldmobile-4T65E

Do you have an air compressor available to test the third piston?

It's gotta be something leaking in the fluid path to the piston, or the piston itself. It seems like something is happening and the clutches aren't even trying to apply. What did the pan look like? Sounds like an air test is needed, even on the input\third drum itself.

It's called the driven sprocket washer. But i tore it apart to check the sprag yesturday and put the that washer in from my extra trans and put it all back together. So I'm gonna go start from scratch and take it all apart. I'll let you know what I find in about 3 hours.
and yes I have a compressor. I tested them before I put it back together when I fixed it and third seemed a little weak even with new soaked frictions.

There's your sign. That weak third gets under a lot more pressure when it's engaged. You are right, that's the driven support thrust washer, I stole a pic from this thread: http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com...topic1483.html but here:

Might want to check the input\3rd drum from your parts trans and see if it's any better. What manual are you using for reassembly?

Well the pan doesn't look bad. Just some very very fine black material on the bottom.
I'm not using a manual. I've done it multiple times. I know where everything goes. But bill put a link in a different thread i started.

    4t65e clutch test: http://youtu.be/iPpAav4Mf7Y
the large one is the one that I replaced yesturday. It's the driven support thrust washer... and the other one is the the washer that goes on the front of the sprocket. pretty much they are the washers that go directly in front and behind the sprocket.

in the video third has no response even tho the frictions are new. What do I need to replace to correct this? Switch my new frictions to the input and third housing from my old trans?
