As long as I have driven a car I have never had a trans go out on me. I have had engines but never a trans. So i took my luck out on a GXP knowing the known issues. I bought it from a buddy's collision shop in march. Most of everything is stock/never been replaced. Just did the rear wheel bearings last week what a pain. I did the fronts within two months of having the car. As well as a tune up because of a misfire on #1 which is common due to DOD. Finally my question. The fluid is dirty and I am scared to flush it. It drives fine. It shifts good but i get a faint jerk when putting into reverse. I think every car does this after the trans has been used for 125,000 mi. What would be some advise? I would like to do a trans cooler from TEP. I have never changed a filter before and I know the trans holds 7.4qts. of fluid.

I have been chewing at this ever since I joind the forum and my jaw is hurting now . what to do...what to do??

drop the pan, change the filter, run it for a week, drop the pan again. the gasket is re-useable.

another option after the filter change and the fluid is topped up; disconnect the cooler line (I think ??? the lower one at the rad is the outlet from the trans) put a hose from the steel line into a drain bucket. run the car and pump out 2 liters. shut the car off and add 2l and repeat. nothing gets stirred up and the fluid is pumped out by the trans pump in the normal flow direction.

I'm debating on a trans cooler myself. Sometimes it gets up to 100*Celcius. If will probably still last along time at that temp but I prefer it to run at 60-70*C.

do not flush the tranny, ( the flush could kill your trans) pan drop new filter 8 new quarts of fluid. add a cooler to keep your temps in check.

you can also add a shift kit when you drop the pan.

check your strut mounts aka upper engine mounts aka dog bones, and motor mounts, they may need to be changed, you can also flip the dog bone mount bushing to firm up the engine some more.

do not use rtv or any sealer on the trans pans. its not needed and could crud up the trans if any rtv breaks off. its a $110 gasket, wash it off with the pressure washer and it will be fine.

Holy bananas canada prices maybe, here in MN its 25-30 for a new rubber/metal gasket with a filter at NAPA.

But as for the OP, just buy a shift kit, drop the pan, do the kit and filter and fill it back up.

Great advice I will probably handle this around Feb-Mar. Also I know what a shift kit does but how do you install one? I guess its a silly question

How to section, then read the top "sticky".

Though its on a 97-03 car, its all the exact same for you.
