How bad is it for our transmissions to start a 30mph race on second?
I'v heard members take their cars past 100mph on second.
I usually run on 3rd from any speed.

Where do you have the room to race for 30 miles?
If you mean 30MPH, and are talking about pulling it back into "2", don't. Just leave it in D. The transmission will decide what is best based off its programming and how much throttle you give it. The manual bands aren't designed for that.
Intense Racing and ZZP both sell upgraded input shafts which is the first weak link to break. The next problem area is the chain set and many places including myself sell an upgraded kit that converts it from a dual chain to a single chain arrangement and handles quite a bit more power. ZZP also offers a stronger output shaft and oil pump shaft which I really havent found a need for the pump shafts but they are a nice part and eliminate concern for spline wear as they are much stronger. Really an input shaft and chain will get the trans deep into the 11s, and a good build on top of that of course to assure the clutches live
There are a few options for clutches and I prefer using OE Borg Warner frictions in all of my builds and have not had a reason yet to change. They are very durable and last a long time. There are a number of different shift kits available also. I use Transgo kits primarily for the better accumulator spring setup and make a few of my own internal changes in addition to the kit. Intense and Thrasher both offer a pretty complete performance shift kit that many have used over the years with good success.
