Thread: No gears foward or reverse

So my novella continues.

I installed the trans and reverse servo cover. Here is my new issue.
After installing the trans is was shifting long out of first gear and sometimes wouldn't go into 1st at a stop. Sometimes it would shift perfect. I was thinking it was just trying to learn after having a jacked up trans.
Last night I drove around for about 30 miles. This morning it went to shift out of first (after about 2 miles of city driving where it went up to third gear) and now I have no forward or reverse gears. I didn't feel anything let go like a chain or shaft. I also have been babying it since I put it in.

What is everyone's idea? I have the battery disconnected hoping it is a PCM issue. I will also be trying to reflash the PCM later.

With it running, pull the dipstick and look to see if there are bubbles on it. Bubbles would mean air in the fluid or maybe a channel plate gasket.

Did you redo the clutches before putting the trans together?

I can check the gasket but that would be very odd and unfortunate because I can replace them. I didn't have a chance to replace the tunnel clutches but when is was shifting it was shifting fine.

The metal channel plate gaskets are a little more tricky to install. Because the metal ridge actually is crushed while torquing them down they have to be checked and re-torqued several times to ensure that it's torqued to the proper spec. With the paper style gasket it's not an issue but with the newer metal ones they have to be checked.

With no movement in either forward or reverse, that would lead me to think it's fluid related. If fluid isn't pumping, then the bands etc aren't being applied. You said there was no odd noises, which would suggest the chains (new) are fine.

If you have no bubbles or fluid pushing out the vent, I'd aim for the pan to check for debris and that the filter is fully engaged in the collar.

Yeah I have no clings and clangs. I will check for bubbles and the filter tonight when I get out of work.

So I changed the filter. Nada I also don't see any bubbles on the stick. I did find a couple of pieces of aluminum in the pan. So I think is was a one night stand with this trans.

baahh that would have been the smart thing to do. I found two pieces smaller then half size of a dime. There was some clutch powder.

Did you replace the torque converter on the replacement?

Yeah..pics would be key for parts identification.

It's sad how well we can ID broken stuff.

I didn't replace the TC but it is less then a year old. The trans also let go in the middle of a shift. When the old trans was in the TC worked well. When I lost all the forward gears on the last trans I still had a strong reverse.
