OK, was going for a drive, and then when leaving a stop light from shift 1st to second the car shuddered. Torque converter is locking up too soon.

I read another post about this code.

1998 GTP. Car is my daily driver, 165k miles. No mods, just drive is nice and normal.

Went to autozone and it is code P0742.

I know the part is 35 bucks, but my question is could it be any other part, like the throttle position sensor or is it the tcc solenoid?

The code listed gave a couple of possible causes. Whta is the transmission range switch? That is one of the possible causes.

If it is the solenoid, can I change it myself? Where is it located?

I do all my own work on my cars, just did my lim gasket a month ago. Rebuilt my 87 Cutlass from the ground up, every last nut and bolt, just as a reference to my abilities.

    So what say you all?

    THanks.

Here is another question. Can I just unplug the TCC solenoid and run it without the lockup for a day or two until I get the parts if that is what is wrong?

All the solenoids are located under the side cover, have to drop the sub frame a bit to get to them.

You would have to cut the wire in the trans harness, because it is just one connector.

OK, so to be clear, the TCC solenoid is located behind the side cover (front or back of trans?) and to replace it do you absolutely have to drop the subframe?

And all the wires to the trans are in one harness so you cant just unplug the harness to disable the tcc correct?

Any diagrams out there so I can get a feel for the side cover?

If I were to cut the one wire for the TCC in the harnes, where is the harness, and what color wire am I looking for?

did some more researching. It looks like the tan/black wire in the harness is for the tcc solenoid.

Now, is the harness on the drivers side of the trans, up at the top of the side cover?

d/s top of the side cover , that plug is for the tcc i think. if you search youtube for a gtp and tcc/pcs solenoid replacement, a guy has a vid of what he had to do to get to it all the sensors in the side cover.

and why are you cutting a wire? im lost on that.

you can also pull the fuse for it, or unplug it.

Thanks all for the help. I appreciate it.

I was going to cut the wire as a last resort only. The way I understood it was that whole wiring harness going into the trans that had the tan/black wire for the tcc solenoid couldnt be unplugged as a whole without screwing up the trans shifting etc, so cutting the wire to disable the solenoid was my only hope. I have no manuals, so no idea on any other way to disable it. And being that this is my only daily driver, I cant have a car I cant drive to get to work tomorrow morning.

I didnt know that there was a fuse for the tcc solenoid. Where is it at?

I have a chassis manual for my 87 Cutlass, which is fantastic. Guess I need to get one for my GTP as well. Sick of not knowing where something is or how it routes on this car. lol

But that is why I have been asking here. I need this car to drive correctly for tomorrow morning, and replacing the tcc is not happening tonight. Maybe this weekend I could do it at my buddies house, since he has a lift.
