    Looking for some advice:

2004 GTP CompG with Tap Shift 87K miles.
Transmission fluid does not smell burnt, although it is looking a little on reddish brown side.

Transmission will not engage in Drive.
Drop into Manual - Transmission engages in 1st. Step on Throttle, car moves but shudders around 5mph
Hit the Tap Shift to put into 2nd Gear, All is fine, car moves can shift into 3rd (did not try 4th) .
Start out in 2nd, car moves with no problem, can tap into 3rd
When coming to stop, it drops back to 1st, again it shudders

Anyone see this type of behaviour before?

Sounds like a broken forward apply band.

    Thanks.

    Now for obvious questions.

    1) Guess this means a rebuild?
    2) Any danger (besides complete failure) of driving it to the shop to get it fixed?

after you get into second gear it should be fine. the trans allready needs to be torn into so can;t really hurt it any more then it is
But why make it an SE?

It does mean a complete rebuild, the band is in the farthest part of the transmission, and is about the 4-5th piece you put in when it's going back together.

Update: Took the car to a local shop. The culprit as surmised by Reptile was in fact the forward apply band. There was a chunk of it laying in the pan.

A reman unit was installed and that has issues. When the trans is cold, it is slow to engage additionally, when applying power in 1st, the RPM's will spike up with little or no power applied to the pavement. As an added gem, while the trans is still cold, it will not properly downshift when power is applied when in 4th. e.g the RPM's will spike up past 4K before it decides it wants do downshift.

The shop assured me that the proper transmission for the car was in fact ordered and installed, however I can't get over the feeling that the one supplied was for the GTP and not the the Comp-G.

Any of the smart guys out there have any ideas.

Sounds like a worn input clutch piston. Another issue with these transmission, although, I'm not sure if it will cause significant problems besides banging gears.

    Agreed...

If you want to confirm it's the right trans. Pull it up on rams and read the tag on the trans. It is located on the passenger side right next to the inner cv shaft by the differential cover.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    yup

i will find the chart i used when we where playing musical transmissions with the 97

    edit here

    http://www.gmtuners.com/transmission/2004_4T65-E.pdf

tapshift should be 4CBB also remember a GTP trans will not even work in a tap shift car do to the wiring so the ods of it being the wrong trans is unlikely but have seen stranger things
