I think something in the trans is taking a **** because I have never heard a trans whine like its a turbo. I put it neutral and rev the engine no sound , put in gear and get to about 40 mph and its starts whining and the faster I go , the louder it gets. The car only has 50,000 on it and doesn't get beat . Any thoughts.

i could be wrong, and maybe somebody with a better idea will chime in, but im trying to be optimistic here, maybe your engine has a vac leak? I had that happend once on a different car. one day it sounded like a turbo, turned out to be a vac leak. but these transmissions in our cars have a horrible track record. good luck

Try dropping the pan and changing the fluid/filter. It almost sounds like thr pump is starving for fluid.

How's the current fluid look? Wipe it on a white towel and see if its still red.

Also check to be sure your power steering fluid is full as well.

    peeeee essss fluid first!

I had the same problem you're having, same sound and changes with speed.. it was the power steering pump starving, not the transmission. Filled up the ps fluid and I never heard the sound again to this day. (Like 2 years)

Whining is starving for fluid typically. question is..what plugged teh filter.

I'm optimistic for ya. Unless you let 2003 SSEi drive your car. It's all over if Pat's driving..lol

Power steering fluid is full , if the car is in neutral wand I rev the engine the whine is gone . It is not coming from the engine, or wheel bearings . I have been checking things out and I even talked Dave the trannyman and we have come to the conclusion that its probably a bearing . Either the torque converter bushing , or pump bearing or something in the gear case.

My car is bone stock. The sound IS NOT COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I have explored every thing that would be easy to fix . I am just looking for answers to what besides the torque converter clutch in my TRANS would cause the whining as I am not to familiar with this transmission. I have worked on , rebuilt , and changed a lot of transmission but I have not worked with this engine/trans combo... As I posted in an earlier comment I think it is a bearing of some sort because it only makes the whine in drive , under a load. In neutral or park no noise. The whine starts while driving under normal conditions at about 28 mph and continues until I stop the car or put it neutral.....

Your description sound similar to mine problem except I'm hearing a clicking like sound. My doesn't start until around 30mph and stops at exactly 15mph when coming to stop. I also goes away while coasting in neutral. I have 2008 GXP with 52000 on it.

    I posted here: http://www.grandprixforums.net/odd-n...ing-41657.html

Here's the audio: GXP Transmission Noise - YouTube

    /rant
I took it to my local GM dealer and they called saying the the front hub bearings were bad and replaced them. I thought that was good but didn't understand why the hub had anything to do with what seemed to be a tranny issue. It didn't fixed the problem. Turns out he just need to do some work to be able to charge GM for the time troubleshooting. He also claimed tranny fluid should be changed @ 36k were as the manual states 50K for harsh conditions, 100k for normal conditions( it had 42k at the time). On a second visit I had him ride in the car and he claimed that the noise was normal. Basically he wasn't prepared to do any troubleshooting unless he was certain he would be able to bill GM for it. That left a sour taste in my mouth and haven't been to another dealer since. /rant

Well the situation sounds the same but the noise the trans is making is different... It's going to the shop on Monday , GM is gonna pay half for whatever is wrong in the trans. Did you get it fixed and what was it.......

Yeah, the sound is not anything close to your description but everything else was spot on. I did not get it fixed, it's still clicking. I'd be very interested in knowing what your issue ended up being. I may go back eventually but I have trust issues with dealerships at the moment.

I took my car in and they pulled the trans and found the some teeth were broken in the planetary gear set , also something wrong with the case so they put a new trans in , no rebuild, new trans. GM paid for half , my cost $1476.96 ......I get my car back tomorrow.. they say that there are upgraded parts in the new trans , time will tell . Also a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty......so that's good.

my question is why did you have to pay for half if you only have 50000 miles, you should have been covered under the 5/100 powertrain, the onlything they dont cover is leaks from the trans-cooler lines or the cooler itself, im taking mine in on wednesday, i've got a leak and my fluid smells pretty burnt, and i think somethings effd up in the gear box because sometimes its shifting way to hard along with some other misc issues

That would be because its a 4 yr,100,000 mile warranty... And it expired in august....do your home work first. I was lucky to have a friend who is the service manager at the dealership and he got GM to pay half or it would have been 3,000 plus........

I had my 2007 GXP grand Prix transmission rebuilt recently and every since I got it back, it's been making this exact noise that you described here. did you ever figure out exactly what your cars problem was?
