I have a 2008 GXP with around 44K on it. Recently I started noticing an odd noise coming from the front. I can only describe it as a combination of a solenoid like clicking noise and a slow metal on metal grinding noise. Seems like it coming from the front left. Here are the known symptoms:

    • There is no sound when idling.
    • While driving the sound goes away when shifting to neutral.
    • While driving the sound goes away at exactly 15 mph when coming to a stop.
    • The sound intensifies slightly with engine speed but the pitch doesn't change.
    • If I give a fairly hard throttle blip while driving the sound goes away for a short time but eventually comes back a few seconds later.
    • Shifting seems normal. TapShift works like it should.

I plan on putting it on stands soon. Is there anything I should be focusing on or does anyone know what could be causing the noise? I'm leaning towards a drive-line issue since the sound goes away when sifting to neutral.

    Thanks.

Have you tried to put it in gear with it sitting stopped and rev the engine with your foot on the brake pedal to load it? If it is load related you may not be able to duplicate it in the air but is definately worth a try to see if you can hear it from the bottom. Often a wheel bearing or axle can make a noise like this but wont go away putting the shifter in nuetral.

No I haven't tried that. I will be putting in the air tomorrow night so I will before that. Would there be any correlation between it going away while in neutral and at exactly 15 mph?

The speed could be a shift occuring. You can try putting the car in tapshift mode and keep it in the same gear through this mph and see if it changes. If it is just in Drive mode then it may just be a downshift while coasting and with different clutches/components applied inside the transmission it can effect when the noise occurs.

So put it up on jacks to see if the noise comes without load. It didn't. I tired it while in D and shifting manually up to third. It's a very distinct noise so I'm sure it wasn't audible. While I was testing just about every system started throwing errors. I got a DIC warning about traction control, stability control, ABS and power steering. That got me thinking, would power steering have anything to do with this? It's variable assist so it changes with speed. It doesn't explain the noise disappearing when in neutral though.

I did noticed that while in the air, down shifting caused a fairly loud clunk. Its that normal?

To answer your question Trannyman, I did try using TapShift while driving and the sound doesn't coincide with shift, it's a constant sound when cruising above 15mph.

Also the sound appears to be coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. Are there any tranny components that would make sound like I've described from that side?

Next I will be using a microphone to narrow down the location of the sound and possibly provide recorded audio of the sound.

Weather got warmer and I got some time to set up a microphone in the engine bay. I put it between the shock tower and overflow tank on the drivers side.

Take a look, it's just audio with titles to mark when the sound start and stops. I just took a quick jaunt around the block while in drive to capture the sound.

If you are interested in more specific audio(mic location, shifting patten etc) let me know and I will try to get it. Thanks for listening.
