    Is the 4t65eHD compatible with all years from 1997-2003?

    I have a 2001 GTP blown tranny, found a 4t65ehd out of a 97 for 400, will that work fine or no?
    2000 GTP, retro's, Debadged, 15% Tint, SD headers, TB HAI, EGR delete,
    Tuned By Reptile, WBS Perf. LCA's, GMPP rear sway bar Dorman front, Tinted tails.

    nope, the 97 are vacumm controled. so you need one out of a 98+

    YOU are INCORRECT, the 97 GTP's are electronic controlled and will work. The 97 gt transmissions are vacuum controlled and won't work.

    all 97 GTPs have the 4t65eHD
    the first half or so of 97 GTs produced have the 4t60e. electronically controlled aside from vacuum controlled shift modulator for firmness of shifts. people always confuse the 4t60e with the 4t60[440T4], which the throttle cable exclusively controls the shift points, while the modulator controls the firmness.

    I could have been a bit more specific, but yes you are right in that the 97 grand prix uses the 4t60e

    And again you aren't specific. It's not GP's, it's GT's. Stress on the T. Aka if you were SC'd you have the 65, if you weren't you could have the 60.

    The 97 65 is slightly different from the 98+ in that it has the same clip retaining the diff that the 60 had before it. In 98 they changed that and a couple other small things. The only time this would be important is if you kill the 97 diff.

    All you need to do is swap in a 98+ output shaft and that can be done without dissasembling the trans. Oh by the way, your not specific when you forgot the "T" in GP's, and by the way the 97 gp gt's had 4t60e's. You forgot the "e" which is very important because it is electronically controlled.

    Actually if you want to sound like a smart ass, their are numerous differences between all 4t65e's. The valve body don't all have the forward and reverse servo boost valves and this happened in 2000. The 97 4t65e output shaft is different. The manual valve setup can be different. The oil pumps aren't the same as they changed them mid year in 2002 which went from a 2 piece to a 3 piece design. The sprag assembly was changed in some 2003's and 2004's+. The internal mode switch was changed in some 99+. The reverse reaction drum changed midway through 1997.

    Those were just a few changes and as long as you swap an assembled trans from a 97GTP into and 98-2002, it will work as long as you address the cooler fittings.

    I wasn't trying to be a smart ass, obviously you are though. Take a second and reread what I wrote. The T isn't missing from GP meaning GTP, because the GTP should have always had the 65. You can go ahead and try to be technical all you want about the e, right after you show me a 4T65 that was vacuum controlled. Comes down to semantics about the e.

    Obviously you and I both know a bit about the transmissions, how about we dump the attitude and help the OP?

    lol I'm good, im learning alot from both of you, I ended up with a 98 GTP 4t65e plus the motor and a 3.4 pulley for 800, going to swap the trans in now and rebuild the motor or sell it depends on what happens. also going to take my time and rebuild the tranny out of the car for the future where i blow the 98 tranny up.

    I was referring to the 60 which was a 4t60e and not a 4t60. The 4t65e is the only base trans which came in two forms, the standard 4t65e or the 4t65e-hd. There are various drive ratios out there though, and I'm not factoring the awd option either aka versatrak.

    Since you guys are so intuitive, I have a question of my own.
    I have an 01 GP GT with a 4t65e, I am building the motor for it now and have had a hard time keeping transmissions in it. I was thinking about upgrading to the 4t65e HD.
    How would I accomplish this if at all possible.

    Just put it in and get a GTP drive shaft for the one side cuz its shorter I forget which one though I'm really super tired.

    If you are having a hard time with the non-hd 4T65e, then you will want to know the differences between the HD and non-HD are gear ratio and basically the size of the differential.

    Therefore it you aren't killing the diff, an HD trans won't have much more to offer you. It's probably time to build one up to handle more power.

    I thought about putting one together. I read ALLDATA and they said that I would need a bunch of specialty tools. If it is something I am capable of doing then I would be more than happy to.

    Yeah, I've done it. Putting one together from existing parts is different than rebuilding.

    Minimum specialty tools you'll want are the input/3rd gear sleeve and a clutch compresor tool.
