After getting a transmission service on my GP, I've noticed after the car is warmed up that the shifting is a bit rough at accelaration. It's new Dexron III in there now; should a switch to Dexron VI clear up most of the problems?
Well, I never really knew how the shifting was, at I had the service done almost immediately after buying it. And I thought I was something that occurred "after warming up." But after driving 3 hours to my parents, then driving back home the next day, the rough shifting was not there. I took the 180* thermo out and put a 195* thermo in as the car was running a bit cold. It still is, but that could be due to a leaking intake manifold, maybe. That's another thing that has to be fixed, but after the recent dent to the wallet, it's going to have to wait.
Dex VI did make my tranny shift better. But, it was doing pretty well already. Been a trooper. I'm not sure how it would do to help your issue.
Trans fluid is a mystery that will never be solved in my opinion. Different friction material require different transmission fluids, but why is the question. Honda requires honda a.t.f, which I understand because it's one of the best fluids on the market and aftermarket frictions and factory work ideal with it, now other people don't agree with that statement, so who really is right? What I recomend is pull your trans dip stick and if it says mercon v or dexron vi or whatever put that back in there unless you just had a rebuild, then listen to the rebuild shop, because fluid is critical to friction material and computer calibration, also don't believe any transmission or dealership on which fluid you need, because there is a complex science involved in what fluid goes with each friction material and computer strategy. To tell you the truth... I can't give you a reason why the so called fluid the manufactuere calls for is needed, but until I do I'd go by it.
Maybe, as the shift issues come and go. When I'm really looking/listening for it, it's not there. So I forget about it, then a few days later, it's back. It's not missing, or revving high before shifting, just rough. Since it's a daily driver, and I won't rag it out like my Imp, I'm not too concerned. It's just something to watch.
Just a thought. Have you checked your trans fluid level? Just do that when your car is hot, running, in park, on a level surface and make sure the fluid is to the top of the XXXs.
But Dexron VI is a much better fluid. There is a reason that you won't be able to find Dex III at all in a couple months...because Dex VI is superior.
