their has been no engine work done to my car in 50,000 miles. and this problem is brand new.
sounds to me like the torque converter unlocking and locking.......are your fluid levels OK on the tranny? When was the last time you had a pan drop/filter replacement done?
I have never changed the trans. Filter or the fluid. I now have 240,000 miles and its to late.
The trans was a quart low.
fill it up...I cant believe you havent ever touched it.......you are lucky it lasted anywhere near this long. top it off and see what it does. Let us know.
if you topped it off already, did this fix the problem?
i have topped it off. i used some trans fluid to stop trans slip. i have not drove it yet. if it the torque converter is it an easy fix?
that depends on how much you know and if you would be doing it yourself or have someone who knows what they are doing to help. It can be labor intensive as you would have to remove the tranny to get to it. and the fix itself depends on if you actually know it is the torque converter mechanical part or if it is the electronics which control the torque converter. The easiest thing would be to take it to a tranny shop or two and see if you can get some free quotes to repair it. It is not out of the realm of possibility that you just need some new fluid and a new filter in there. What does your fluid look like? is it a reddish color or does it appear dirty or brownish? Does it smell burnt at all? Do not get a tranny flush though, as it could loosen up deposits that have been building for this long in your tranny and if they loosen up could plug up your tranny in various locations. A tranny pan drop/filter change would not do this. It is hard to say what is wrong with the tranny for sure without actually experiencing what you are exactly.
the fluid is a redish brown color and does have a slight burnt smell.
that means that it needs to be changed, however dont change it if your tranny is junk, as it would just be a waste of money. Have you driven it since you topped it off? Did it help at all?
