I have a 97 gtp with a 3.4 pulley, cold air, exhaust, throttle body, and pcm. I'm having an entire rebuild done on my tranny. Wheres the best place to buy a reliable cheap torque converter for moderate horsepower?
Thanks

Precision converters are great and are very reliable. I run it in my built tranny.
They are under $200, and have warehouses across the country. They ship them too if you don't have a warehouse close.

ok thanks just what i was looking for they have a location very close also![]()
I use Precision of New Hampton converters in all of my rebuilds that they apply to or that I recommend them for and have never had one fail which is an amazingly good success rate for torque converters, you will be just fine going that route.
come on dave y didnt u tell me this before i got my tranny rebuilt
How do you order from them? Do you just call there direct or toll free number?
He asked for inexpensive and good, that is why I recommended what I did. If he wanted a built converter or needed a higher stall speed for a turbo or NA build then it would be a different story! I used to suggest ZZP converters to guys needing an upgrade as they seemed to have the best track record but I have performance stall converters built for me now and those are what I use when needed, but that doesnt apply to what the OP needs
precision torque converters are great, I just wouldn't recommend them for someone in the 12's. If your in the 12's, chances are your looking for a higher stall anyways.
Just call them up and tell them what its for. IF you know your torque converter code its pretty simple. They'll either direct you to the nearest warehouse, or take the order their.
I think the stock GTP TC code is JTFM (somebody verify that)
theirs a few other codes that give or take away a few hundred RPM's for the stall if you want that too.
JTFM is correct for the 97-02ish model years, 03/04+ used a JZFM and the stall speed is identical. I use these converters in cars running down to the 12.0 mark and have never had one bad. I suggest and do use these because they are reliable and dont cause problems, not because I want to up-sell something that isnt required and could potentially cause problems. How many guys do you read about blowing up a stock torque converter? How many guys have problems with aftermarket converters? I have a pile of bad converters from 4T65Es here that are aftermarket from various vendors and not a single stock replacement that has gone bad, this is about 6 years time worth that I have used Precision of New Hampton conveters and I have sold and used several hundred of them in that time frame. There is no reason for a higher stall speed if you cant go WOT from a stop with full traction, it just makes traction worse and slows the car down at the track. The stock converters stall to 2800-3000 in most M90 cars even with basic bolt-ons which is more than plenty and on a dyno the torque is typically already near peak and going down around 3500 rpm.

When i called precision they said their JTFM converter has a stall sped of 1630?
That is the rating they have for it in their converter book which is way off and is directed towards an NA engine which will give a vastly different stall speed. When i called precision they said their JTFM converter has a stall sped of 1630?
