Ok so about a month ago I bought a 2004 Comp G with 84k miles from a guy who put a lot into it. About 2 weeks in though I notice that it's thumping a little when it upshifts and come to find out it's skipping third. I know I'm an idiot because I didn't check the fluid when I bought it, it slipped my mind and turns out it was burnt. I have to keep telling myself what's done is done

Anyway it just suddenly happened, no problems leading up to it or anything. I decided to try a transgo shift kit since I'd seen it help someone, and while in there I found the 2-3 accumulator piston seal was torn and not working at all so I put in a new one and filled it up dex 6. Shifts better and doesn't thump between 2nd and 4th anymore. But still no 3rd From what I'm reading a bad clutch should've shown some slipping before it went out, and shouldn't bad solenoids usually affect more than one gear? When I downshift from 4th to 3rd for a split second it feels like it's going to third but then I'm pretty sure it's in second and had to rev match, cuz it would hop up to 4000~ rpm at 40mph. I get no codes, it basically just kinda acts like 3 doesn't exist. Could this be an issue with the PCM, or maybe can a solenoid only affect one gear? I just think if it was a bad clutch it'd have been slipping and would still be having issues, not just shifting like usual minus 3rd one day.

you lost 3 rd gear, same happened to me, just gone one day. sprags go out im told.

being a tap shift, you need to find another tap shift tranny, or get yours rebuilt, they are a rare tranny, so finding a good used one is not easy.

40 at 4000 rpm sure sounds like 1st gear to me. 2nd gear will take you upwards of 90mph. As for a solenoid, they control two gears. 3rd gear occurs when both solenoids are off (no power to either).
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Did you get yours rebuilt or sell the car? A sprag clutch shouldn't cause this issue from what I've seen. I'm thinking mine's a PCM issue since the solenoids all check out fine. I pulled it to check the model number to see about a replacement and I found a thick black wire with a white stripe was stripped and part of it exposed where the harness goes into the air box. I'm gonna patch it and and try and figure out what it grounds. The air box had a mouse nest inside it from sitting for a while so I'm not sure if it's from that or from when I pulled it to clean it. The issue def started sometime after I cleaned the air box so who knows

If I swap the PCM do I have to try and find one with all the exact same numbers? I found a guy who sells them flashed but the model number isn't the exact same even though its a 2004

if you had mice eat a wire you'd have a code or two by now.

i got a used tranny installed, then a few years later that one took a dump, i now have a full rebuilt tranny in it.

dont see why you would need a new pcm. these trannys kinda suck. tap shift tranys are even more of a pita. if its the tranny you'll need a rebuild. or you need another tap shift tranny if you go used, nothing else works. now find a good used one...

I suppose it could be wiring, but like Scott said... you should be getting a code from it. Sprags don't throw codes
