My daughter has a 99 Grand Prix GTP. What trans is typically in that vehicle?

She tells me the trans is slipping and that a couple trans shops told her the trans is gone. I am thinking of getting one from the bone yard and having it swapped out. So I need info to tell the yard.

She really wants a newer car but I am considering patching this together for a while longer to get her a bit further down the road. The other option is to junk it and move on.

    Thanks.

its the hd one. found in regal gs, grand prix gtp. 98-00 iirc it has to be the right one due to its gears, if the wrong one is installed it wont shift right. unless you have the pcm tuned for the gear change, and then you would also need to change the flex plate to a na engine's so the tc bolts up right.

Ok so the 4T65E-HD, correct? If I find this one I should not have any of the problems that you pointed out?

I Put the engine in this car several years ago. If I decide to put the trans in do I pull the trans out the top of do I have to drop the sub-frame? I would rather just have a trans shop do the swap. I'm not in much of a mood to do this right now but maybe I will. Just lining up the options.

    Thanks for your quick response.

97-02 HD transmissions will swap in, they all have 2.93 gearing.

You may get asked the RPO code for it, which is FR2.

Be aware of the coolant line connectors! I have a 99 GTP and I put a 2000 GTP rebuilt trans in mine and I had to swap the connectors. The 99's were the last year of the threaded cooler lines. The newer trans came with "quick-connect" connectors that have a check ball in the connector. The 99 trans has a check ball in the valve plate while the newer ones had them in the connector to prevent back flow.
