Basically I am curious to see what everyone is using for engine hoists and engine stands. I'm considering picking one of each up as I might be pulling the engine out of my 2000 GT and working on it over the next few years. I would also like to buy some higher end equipment that would last through multiple engine pulls and swaps varying from 4 cylinder motors to big block V8s. I have future desire to do some pretty crazy swaps so I would like to get something that I know will last and not pull an engine and put it back and be complete junk. Same goes for the stand. Something that would last and I don't have to worry about leaving the engine on it for extended periods of time. Any and all pointers are greatly appreciated!

Is it a 1 ton or 2 ton? I see they carry both.

I would have to look at mine but the tonnage depends on how far out the boom is. A four wheeled engine stand is much more stable.

No need for a leveler, using the brackets on the engine, it levels itself perfectly. I have a Big Red hoist, been using it the past 12 years or so, got it on sale at pep boys for like $150. Have two stands, one is an autozone $50 one, other I got on amazon for a little over $100 shipped (iirc same brand as the picker), folds up to save some space. The engine I recently installed in my bonne sat on that autozone stand for over 3 years, currently have the old motor on it now, and an L36 on the other one. You won't have to worry about leaving a motor on there for extended periods, lol.

I had an HF 4 wheel stand and likely the same hoist that is in the pic above. Hoist will do up to 2000 lbs which means the boom comes out plenty far. I would suggest the leveler, the aluminum bracket is known to snap and it's nice to have any angle you want. On the stand.. four wheels is the way to go.

For the stand, I found some old bed frame (angle iron) to cut/weld up so that I could lay it on the stand to hold a larger steralite container (walmart). This let's you flip over engines/transmissions knowing they will leak/drip without a care in the world. Also did up a brace for a transmission to bolt up. That let's you work on them like the rebuilders.

    Trans bracket

    Hoist

Here's a before I made the bracket to hold the drip bucket. Sure the bucket would balance itself mostly, but it would also fall a lot.

Can't find one with the drip bucket holder. Essentially it was a couple of pieces of cut bed frame that were welded with cross pieces to make it so they locked onto the stand and held the bucket from tipping off the stand. Worked pretty well and I'd do a better job if I were making another.

Transmissions that were on that bracket (I'm missing a few lol)

Engines on hoist/leveler - I can't consider remembering them all. It's a lot of use though.

If you want the super nice ... really great hoist. Get one that has a double pump, so it lifts on the upward and downward strokes equally. The ram on the double pump would look similar to this

i just got the HF 1 ton. it failed to reach the middle of the engine. i had to mark and drill new holes in the black boom arm. still worked fine tho.

got it on sale for 145.00

got the HF leveler, was like 30 bucks.

and the stand i have. my brother got this like 20 years ago and it sat in a box new the whole time. this style dint come close to flipping over or nothing.

When you get a leveler... do not attach it to the engine like Scott did.

Being new to this whole engine pulling thing and not really being able to tell what Scott did, where did he go wrong?

the brackets are bolted the long way ( the brackets a L, i used the short side of the L) cause i was lazy and did not want to take the egr off or the front dog bone mount. they did bend a little bit. but bent right back.

Well... First off he painted the engine bright yellow.

Those brackets that he bolted to the engine are basically just problematic. The larger leveler comes with chain only, no brackets. Odd now that I notice it. It was how he bolted those brackets on..
